CISSA-AmeriCorps Member

 

Communities In Schools of San Antonio is currently accepting applications for the CISSA AmeriCorps program. We are proud to be selected as a recipient of the AmeriCorps State grant through the OneStar Foundation. AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs where individuals commit their time to address critical community needs like increasing academic achievement, mentoring youth, fighting poverty, preparing for disasters, and much more. Ultimately, AmeriCorps members get things done for America!

 

For CISSA’s AmeriCorps program, members will provide research-based integrated student supports to students at-risk of dropping out of school. Placed directly in a high-need public school under the supervision of an experienced CIS Site Coordinator, AmeriCorps members will engage in the following activities:

  1. Provide intentional case-management services to a minimum of 5 economically disadvantaged students who are at-risk of dropping out of school
  2. Co-facilitate 1 group to address common barriers among students and provide a supportive environment in which students can build relationships, develop critical skills, and learn from the AmeriCorps Member and their peers
  3. Coordinate services within the CIS Six Components, including Supportive Guidance and Counseling, Health and Human Services, Parent and Family Engagement, College and Career Readiness, Enrichment, and Academic Support. Activities vary depending on program
  4. Participate in weekly supervision sessions and trainings
  5. Serve a minimum of 450 hours through the duration of their service term

 

This rewarding experience is a great way to get hands-on professional experience in the field of social work and counseling while earning money for school. The CIS-SA AmeriCorps program seeks to provide members with the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills that will be valued by future employers, practice and develop their skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and time management skills while making a real difference in students’ lives.

 

Desired Skills/Background

  • Working toward a bachelors or master’s degree in a Social Work, Counseling, Family Studies, or other human services field
  • Possess a desire and ability to work with underserved youth
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Good written and oral communication skills

To be eligible for the AmeriCorps program, applicants must:

  • Be 17 years or older
  • Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Aliens
  • Pass a national service criminal history check (FBI fingerprinting, state of service check, and national sex offender registry check)
  • Received a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Must serve a minimum of 450 hours according the service terms listed below. Members must serve for the entire program length. Start and end dates are non-negotiable.

 

Full Year: 09/03/2019- 5/8/2020

Fall Only: 09/03/2019- 12/13/2020

Mid Year: 10/14/2020- 4/24/2020

Spring Only: 01/21/2020

 

While charging time to the AmeriCorps program, accumulating service or training hours, or otherwise performing activities supported by the AmeriCorps program, staff and members may not directly or indirectly engage in the following activities:

  1. Attempting to influence legislation;
  2. Organizing or engaging in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes;
  3. Assisting, promoting, or deterring union organizing;
  4. Impairing existing contracts for services or collective bargaining agreements;
  5. Engaging in partisan political activities, or other activities designed to influence the outcome of an election to any public office;
  6. Participating in, or endorsing, events or activities that are likely to include advocacy for or against political parties, political platforms, political candidates, proposed legislation, or elected officials;
  7. Engaging in religious instruction, conducting worship services, providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship, constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship, maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship, or engaging in any form of religious proselytization;
  8. Providing a direct benefit to –
  1. A business organized for profit;
  2. A labor union;
  3. A partisan political organization;
  4. A nonprofit organization that fails to comply with the restrictions contained in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 related to engaging in political activities or substantial amount of lobbying except that nothing in these provisions shall be construed to prevent participants from engaging in advocacy activities undertaken at their own initiative;
  5. and
  6. An organization engaged in the religious activities described in paragraph C. 7. above, unless CNCS assistance is not used to support those religious activities;
  1. Conducting a voter registration drive or using CNCS funds to conduct a voter registration drive;
  2. Providing abortion services or referrals for receipt of such services; and
  3. Such other activities as CNCS may prohibit.
